Revolutionary War program at Shippen Manor Museum

The life and times of New Jersey soldiers in the War of Independence will be featured at Shippen Manor Museum, the restored 18th Century iron master's mansion located in Oxford, NJ, on Sunday, June 3, from 1-4 pm.

Members of Helm's Company, 2nd New Jersey Continental Line will discuss and demonstrate the drill, tactics and weaponry of George Washington's infantry. The group, composed of reenactors from northern New Jersey recreates a local unit that served throughout the war. Musket firing presentations will be offered throughout the afternoon. Tours of the Manor will be also be available from 1-4 pm, along with discussions of 18th Century food preparation by historian Sally Shutler. The programs are suitable for all ages. 

Shippen Manor Museum is located a quarter mile west of the Route 31/Wall Street intersection in the center of Oxford. The Museum and its programs are sponsored by the Warren County Board of Chosen Freeholders and the Warren County Cultural & Heritage Commission. There is no admission fee.

New Jersey Senior Citizens Art Show

PRESS RELEASE!

All Warren County senior artists, 60 years of age or over, are encouraged to participate in the annual Warren County Seniors’ Art Show. Rules and an application may be requested by; calling the Warren County Cultural & Heritage Commission at 908-453-4381, by downloading the forms, or by sending an email request to wcchc@nac.net. Your completed application form and labeled artwork should be delivered to the Wayne Dumont Jr. Administration Building, between 10 am and 12 noon on Monday, April 23rd.

 Artists may enter one work as either professional or non-professional. The art categories are: acrylic, craft, computer imagery, drawing, mixed-media, oil, pastel, photography, print, and watercolor. All work must be the original creation of the artist, have been completed in the last three years, and may not have been previously entered in the Warren County Seniors’ Art Show. 

Our Annual Seniors’ Art Show is presented by the Warren County Cultural & Heritage Commission, co-sponsored by the Warren County Division of Aging & Disability Services, supported by the Warren County Freeholders, and funded in part by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts. Warren County Students Participate in 2012 Teen Arts Festival

The Warren County Cultural and Heritage Commission is pleased to congratulate all students who took part in the Warren County Teen Arts Festival presented by the Warren County Cultural and Heritage Commission and hosted by Warren County Community College. Approximately 260 students participated in the two day Arts Festival held at Warren County Community College on March 15 and 16.

Professional artists presented workshops in: Manga, a cartooning style developed in Japan; dance styles including Hip-Hop, Improvisation, Modern and, Broadway Show dancing; digital filmmaking processes; sculptural heads; theatrical audition preparation; creative writing techniques; Lithography and Silk Screen print making; Impressionistic style landscape painting; blues guitar; bookbinding; songwriting; conducting; computer 3D Modeling with Blender; Multimedia with Adobe Flash, and Stage Combat.

Critique sessions were conducted to provide participants with one-on-one supportive feedback in the various arts including; theater, vocal and instrumental music, creative writing, poetry and prose, painting, drawing, sculpture, photography and film.

Schools which participated in Teen Arts Festival included; Belvidere High School, Harmony Township School, North Warren Regional High School, and Warren County Technical School and Warren Hills Regional High School.

The Warren County Cultural and Heritage Commission partnering with Warren County Community College produced this year’s 2012 Warren County Teen Arts Festival which took place at Warren County Community College. Support from the Warren County Freeholders make this art experience a reality for the students of Warren County. Warren County Teen Arts is funded in part by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts.

Winners of the Eighth Annual Warren County

Art Teachers & Students Art Show Announced

The Warren County Cultural & Heritage Commission is pleased to announce the winners of the Eighth Annual Warren County Art Teachers & Students Art Show. The works are on display at the Hall Gallery of the Warren County Administration Building on Rt. 519 S. in Belvidere until March 30.

The Eighth Annual Art Teachers’ show was organized, coordinated by presented by Chris Coyle, art teacher at Belvidere High School.

 Winning art teachers include: 1st Place, Jennifer Mazziotta Walter from Harmony Township School, 2nd Place, Jennifer Schilling, from Phillipsburg High School and 3rd Place won by Melissa Erne, from Blair Academy. Works by teachers, Rita Baragona from Blair Academy and Chris Coyle from Belvidere High School are also included in this show.

 Participating students specifically chosen by their art teacher for the high quality of their work are: Connor Holjes of Belvidere High School; Brian Levinson of Blair Academy; Elayna Daniels of Harmony Township School, and Kelsey McDonnell from Phillipsburg High School. 

Blair Academy participating students are: Reona Masago, Emily Boak, Wow Chiaravonant, Audrey Tseng, Jackie Lung, Jack Wedholm, Nuoya Li, Cassidy Kean, Graham Merrifield, and Haven Donovan. Students from Harmony Township School include; Jade Kleine and Kameron Steckel. 

Nationally known sculptor William Skrips of Blairstown was the judge for Warren County's Eighth Annual Art Teachers' Art Show. Mr. Skrips, educated at the School of Visual Arts, is influenced by American folk arts, the “Hairy Who”, and new German expressionism. His sculpture includes carving, welding, and assemblage of ‘found objects’.

The Wayne Dumont Jr. Administration Hall Gallery, on Route 519 S. in Belvidere, is open to the public during regular business hours Monday through Friday and is an ADA accessible location. Christmas Past Comes Alive At Shippen Manor

The Warren County Cultural & Heritage Commission is again proud to present its annual candlelight tours of historic Shippen Manor in Oxford, on Sunday, December 4. Period interiors, decorated for holiday celebrations of the 18th and 19th Centuries will be featured, along with special talks on the evolution of Christmas in America through the Civil War era. Tours will be conducted at 1, 2, and 3 pm, and a period cooking demonstration will be offered by interpretive specialist Sally Shutler.

On Sunday, December 11, the Manor will again play host to noted author and performer Kevin Rawlings, of Hagerstown, Maryland, known throughout the mid-Atlantic states for his portrayals of a 19th Century Saint Nicholas. In the past, Mr. Rawlings based his presentations on cartoonist Thomas Nast’s well-known depiction of Santa in the 1860s. This year, however, he will portray a Santa from the period 1830-1850. Mr. Rawlings is the author for the 1997 book We Were Marching On Christmas Day: A History and Chronicle of Christmas During the Civil War, and will be on hand from 1-4 pm to discuss “Santa history”, as well as to listen to wish lists from young and old. The program is designed for all ages. In addition, cooking demonstrations and special talks about Christmas past will again be available.

Added features of this year’s programs will include a look a how American Christmas traditions were influenced by depictions of Queen Victoria and her husband, Prince Albert as well as an exhibit of Santa figurines dating from the 18th through the early 20th centuries provided by collector John Covert of Hackettstown.

Sixteenth Annual Skylands Scenic Beauty Photo Contest Winners Announced

 The Warren County Cultural & Heritage Commission is pleased to announce the winners of the Sixteenth Annual Skylands Scenic Beauty Photo Contest. Thirty-six entries were received from photographers throughout the area’s northwest region. Over $1900 was awarded in prizes for this year’s competition.

The Best of Show winner for this year’s contest was amateur Joan F. White from Oxford. Ms. White won Second Place in 2010 and 2009.

Winners in the Professional category include: Jean M. Perry from Saylorsburg, PA, First Place for the second year in a row, Don Myles of Belvidere won Second Place, and Bonnie Stanislaw from Blairstown Third Place. Honorable Mention went to Gordon Perry of Saylorsburg, PA. Other professional participants include: Pat Abbot, Trevor Hodgson, Paula Jensen, Pat Mannon, Julia Rose-Dick, Kathleen Rupff,

Carol Southerland, and Patty Wright-Ferrini.

Winners in the Amateur category include: Thomas A. Howell from Netcong, First Place, Kathy Voglas of Phillipsburg, Second Place, and Michael Reilly of Oxford with the Third Place Ribbon. Honorable Mention was awarded to Chris J. Chambers of Parsippany. Other Amateur contestants include: Benjamin Betti, Jim Cook, Carrie Dubiel, Kenneth Gallahor, Michelle Gardner, Charlene Loux, Patricia MacCallum, Sue Ellen Mikowski, Tom Minchin, Jane H. Rapp, Shayna Reed, Craig A. Ritzer, Cheryl Semonchick, and Marina Zindel.

The Student category winners include: Peter Liolia IV in First Place, Jessica Reid in Second Place, and Melissa Chambers in Third Place. Honorable Mention winners include Haven Donovan and Justin Walker.

Robert Beaver, owner of Village Studio in High Bridge, served as the judge for the Sixteenth Annual Skylands Scenic Beauty Photo Contest. Mr. Beaver stated: “The quality of the photographs entered in this show made my job very difficult.”

The Sixteenth Annual Skylands Scenic Beauty Photo exhibit will be displayed until Thursday, January 19, 2012 in the Wayne Dumont Jr. Administration Hall Gallery, on Route 519 south in Belvidere. FREE MOUNTAIN HERITAGE CONCERT AT SHIPPEN MANOR AUGUST 21

Mountain Heritage will perform free on the Shippen Manor stage on Sunday, August 21 at 5 PM. Mountain Heritage musicians include; Bruce Rupert on mandolin, Tim Scheetz on guitar, Mike Terris on banjo and dobro, Matt Koch on bass, and Dan O’Dea on fiddle.

Mountain Heritage is a traditional bluegrass band based out of Bucks County, Pa. The group performs at shows and festivals in the surrounding areas on a regular basis. Mountain Heritage has performed at: Musikfest, Mayfair, Appalachian Fiddle & Bluegrass Association, and Echoes from the Hills festivals.

 Revolutionary Era Medical Display at Shippen Manor

A discussion of Revolutionary-era medicine will be offered on Sunday, August 14, from 1-4 pm at Shippen Manor Museum.

Reenactor and medical historian Marjy Wienkop, of Ewing NJ will be on hand with a display of typical 18th century surgical instruments. In addition, Ms. Wienkop has assembled a large collection of herbs and extracts that were used as common remedies during the period. She is a member the recreated 1st New Jersey Regiment of the Continental Line.

The program is dedicated to Shippen Manor’s builder and original owner, Dr. William Shippen II, a prominent Philadelphia resident and delegate to the Continental Congress, as well as his son, Dr. William Shippen, III, who served as Director of Hospitals for Washington’s Army.

In addition to the medical program, guided tours of the house will be available including interpretations of 18th century cooking techniques by historian Sally Shutler.

SILK CITY CONCERT ON THE SHIPPEN MANOR LAWN AUGUST 14

The Warren County Cultural and Heritage Commission will present a free Silk City string band concert, Sunday, August 14 at 6 pm. The Silk City string band features Larry Cohen, Barry Mitterhoff, and Danny Weiss with an acoustic sound as unique as their repertoire.

Larry Cohen, a nationally famous bass player, has performed with Nick Jamison, Darol Anger, and Mike Marshall among others. His musical background includes classical, jazz, and rock music. Danny Weiss guitarist and lead singer has appeared with Tex Logan, Vassar Clements, and Dave Bromberg. His unique soloing has been recognized by Frets magazine and he performs nationally and internationally.

Barry Mitterhoff, on mandolin, is a member of Hot Tuna and has contributed to film scores such as You’ve Got Mail, Mickey Blue Eyes, The Rookie, and O Brother Where Art Thou? He has recorded and played with Tom Chapin, Hazel Dickens, Tony Trischka, and has performed at Carnegie Hall, the Library of Congress, the White House, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Rainbow Room.

Hailing from Melbourne, Australia, the Rosie Burgess Trio slides from folk to blues to gypsy roots and back. MARIACHI CITLALLI AT SHIPPEN MANOR JULY 31

Get out your sombrero, serape and your maracas for a free Mariachi concert on the lawn of Shippen Manor on Sunday, July 31 at 6 PM. Mariachi Citlalli is sponsored by the Warren County Cultural & Heritage Commission on the Shippen Manor lawn in Oxford, just west of the Route 31 traffic light. Bring your lawn chairs, blankets, alcohol free coolers, picnic baskets, and significant others for traditional south-of-the-boarder Mariachi music.

Founded by Jerry and Francisco Navarrete, Mariachi Citlalli is described by the New York Times as "four young musicians, decked out in elegant black uniforms with fancy buttonwork typical of roving Mexican troubadours". They have been seen in various settings, from “The Rosie O’Donnell Show” and “One Life to Live”, to Madison Square Garden, the United Nations and in performances for world leaders such as; former President of the United States, George H. W. Bush, former President of Mexico, Ernesto Zedillo, and former leader of Dominican Republic, Pena Gomez.

The quartet’s repertory mixes traditional tunes with well known titles and peppers it with several original selections. Instrumentation consists of trumpet, accordion, guitarron (a large bass guitar) and vihuela (similar to a guitar but with a rounded back) mixed with vocal solos and harmonies.

Drive straight to see Straight Drive's free Bluegrass concert on the lawn of Shippen Manor on Sunday, July 24 at 6 PM. Straight Drive is sponsored by the Warren County Cultural & Heritage Commission on the Shippen Manor lawn in Oxford. Bring your lawn chairs, blankets, alcohol free coolers, picnic baskets, and significant others for good ol’ toe tapping pure straight driving bluegrass music.

Straight Drive has played at Bluegrass festivals, major market radio broadcasts, traditional country music shows, and in various clubs. Vocalist Jen Larson, in addition to playing guitar, is a major part of the Straight Drive sound whether singing lead or tenor. She has appeared on A Prairie Home Companion and many other events around the country. Terry McGill (playing banjo since he was thirteen) sings baritone, and has been featured in The Banjo Newsletter. He wrote a banjo instruction manual for Mel Bay Publications.

Mandolinist, Ben Fraker, son of two bluegrass musicians, presents a strong Monroe-flavored style in his music and has played with important artists and groups for many years. Fiddler, Ronnie Feinberg has appeared with Bill Monroe and many other talented bluegrass musicians over the years. Ron was nominated for I.B.M.A. Emerging Artist of the Year in 1995. Jim Treat, on bass, runs a recording studio in his spare time. Jim has played with the Delaney Brothers, The Eager, Hampton, and the McGill Band. Dave Hampton started playing guitar at the age of fourteen and quickly became one of the most notable players in the “Keystone State” and is well known for his outstanding vocal skills.

The Warren County Cultural & Heritage Commission is happy to announce a FREE concert by the WIYOS on the Shippen Manor lawn. Bring blankets or lawn chairs, a couple of friends, and your best relaxing mood on Sunday, July 17, at 6 PM.

The WIYOS take their name from the toughest gang to prowl the streets of old New York, “The Why’os”, circa 1890. Their original compositions have a timeless feel and are inspired by the early American musical idioms of the 1920s and ‘30s blended with human beat-box with a classic swing and New Orleans style rhythms. This trio cre­ates a visual spectacle in the tradition of vaudeville-esque performers. The band is comprised of: Michael Farkas on harmonica, wash­board, kazoo, banjo and vocals; Teddy We­ber, songwriter, on steel guitar and vocals; and Seth Travins, songwriter, on bass and guitar. The Warren County Cultural & Heritage Commission is happy to announce a FREE concert by the Jug Town Mountain String Band on the Shippen Manor lawn. Bring blankets or lawn chairs, a picnic, a couple of friends and your best relaxing mood on Sunday, July 3 from 6 to 8 PM.

The Jug Town Mountain String Band is rooted in the tradition of American acoustic music. This four-piece band performs a variety of styles including; Old Time Mountain Music, Bluegrass, Blues, and Folk Ballads. Featured are Greg Myers, Paul Prestopino, Dick DeVore, and Carol Behrens. Their strong vocals are accompanied by a multitude of instruments including; fiddle, banjo, mandolin, guitar, upright bass, autoharp, dulcimer, and dobro.

FREE Rock Roots Blues Concert at Shippen Manor June 19

 Grammy Nominated Professor Louie & The Crowmatix of Woodstock, NY will be live and in concert FREE Sunday, June 19, 6 to 8 pm on the lawn of Shippen Manor, just west of the Route 31 traffic light in Oxford.

Spring of 2011 Professor Louie was inducted into the South Canadian Blues Society Museum and Professor Louie & The Crowmatix have the distinct honor of being the only artists to have had a live concert recording released by The New York State Museum.  Their musicianship has enabled them to cross over into different musical genres and perform in concert with Orchestras and Choirs around the world.  Winners and Participating Artists in the 2011 Senior Citizen Art Show

 The Warren County Cultural & Heritage Commission is pleased to announce the winners and participating artists in the 2011 Senior Citizen Art Show at the Wayne Dumont, Jr. Administration Building. The works will be shown through May, Senior Citizen Month, with the show concluding June 27, 2011. This show is co-sponsored by the Warren County Division of Aging and Disability Services and the Warren County Cultural & Heritage Commission.

The 2011 Senior Show ribbons awarded in the Professional division for Oil Painting were: First Place, Pat Olds. The Watercolor category winners were: First Place, Gene Clifford and Second Place going to Patricia Lapp. In Acrylic Painting; First Place went to Jeanette Newcomb while Jack Stephens took Second Place. The Pastel category; First Place Ribbon went to Caroline Goldsmith and Second Place was awarded to Ruth Grabner. Carol Southerland took First Place in the Photography category and in the Mixed Media category; First Place was won by Jacqueline Korosec. The Blue Ribbon in the Computer Imagery category was won by Endel Uiga.

The Amateur division winners were: Acrylic painting; First Place award went to Shirley Spangler. Watercolor winners included: Peggy Richards in First Place, Howard E. Kron took Second Place, while Janice Breslin, Maureen Heritage and Nancy Kern-Rice tied for Third Place.

In the Photography category; First Place was awarded to Don Myles; Second Place ribbon was awarded to Susanna Davidovich while Third Place was shared by Brigitte Cubbage and Linda VanHoorebeke. The Crafts category winner was Ray Van Hoorebeke taking the Blue Ribbon.

 Our Annual Senior Citizen Art Show is presented by the Warren County Cultural & Heritage Commission, co-sponsored by the Warren County Division of Aging and Disability Services, supported by the Warren County Freeholders, and funded in part by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts.

Warren County's Blue Ribbon winning art works will be entered in the 45th New Jersey State Senior Citizens Annual Juried Art Contest and Exhibition. The State exhibition will be hosted by Union County Office of Cultural and Heritage Affairs. The location is: Meadow Lakes, 300 Meadow Lakes, East Windsor, NJ. The show will be open to the public Monday through Saturday from 10am to 4pm beginning Monday, September 26 until Thursday, October 27. The closing reception and awards ceremony will be held Friday October 28, 2011, 10:30 AM to 2 pm.

The 2011 Warren County Senior Citizen Art Show will be on display until Monday, June 27. The fully accessible Wayne Dumont Jr. Administration Building is located at 165 Country Road, 519 South, Belvidere, New Jersey. Annual Warren County Seniors’ Art Show

The Warren County Cultural & Heritage Commission is pleased to announce our annual Warren County Seniors’ Art Show. All Warren County senior artists, 60 years of age or over, are welcome to participate by requesting rules and an application from the Warren County Cultural & Heritage Commission, 8 Belvidere Avenue, Oxford, NJ, 07863. Your completed application form and artwork should be delivered to the Wayne Dumont Jr. Administration Building, between 10 am and 12 noon on Monday, April 11th.

Artists may enter one work as either professional or non-professional. The art categories are: acrylic, craft, computer imagery, drawing, mixed-media, oil, pastel, photograph, print, and watercolor.

$36,300 for the Arts Awarded by the

Warren County Cultural and Heritage Commission

The Warren County Cultural and Heritage Commission is pleased to announce 2011 grant awards totaling $36,300 to nineteen County organizations that provide arts programming throughout Warren County.

The following art organizations receiving financial support for their 2011 public arts programming are: Centenary College Literature Colloquium, Hackettstown Community Band, Hunterdon Folk Exchange, NJ Civic Youth Ballet, Performing Arts Society of Northwestern New Jersey, Stone Soup Symphony, Warren County Community College Visiting Author Series, Warren County Community Singers, and Water Gap Singers.

The public arts programs of the following PTA’s and PTO’s are also receiving funding: Harmony, Lopatcong, Pohatcong, Saint Mary’s School Hackettstown, Washington Borough, and Washington Township.

In addition, four community groups are also partially funded for their arts related activities: Friends of the Warren County Library, Pahaquarry Association for History and the Arts, Inc., Pahaquarry Foundation, Inc., and the Washington Business Improvement District.

The Cultural and Heritage Commission, supported by the Warren County Freeholders, funded these nineteen organizations through a grant received from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts. New Jersey State arts funding is derived from a dedicated state hotel/motel occupancy fee, and does not impact property or income taxes. Winners of the Seventh Annual Warren County

Art Teachers & Student Art Show

The Warren County Cultural & Heritage Commission is pleased to announce the winners of the Seventh Annual Warren County Art Teachers & Students Art Show. The works are on display at the Hall Gallery of the Warren County Administration Building on Rt. 519 S. in Belvidere until March 31st.

 The Seventh Annual Art Teachers’ show was organized and coordinated by Chris Coyle, art teacher at Belvidere High School. 

Winning art teachers include: 1st Place, Melissa Erne, 2nd Place, Rita Baragona and 3rd Place won by Jennifer Schilling.

 Participating students specifically chosen by their art teacher for the high quality of their work are: Nathan Dow and Rachelle Mason of Belvidere High School; Meredeth Berry-Toon, Winston Chang, Annabel Gonzalez, Jacqui Lung, Allison Reed and Elyn Ryd of Blair Academy; Nichole Haley, Breelan Koch, and Kyle Schuler from Phillipsburg High School. 

Nationally known sculptor William Skrips of Blairstown was the judge for Warren County's Seventh Annual Art Teachers' Art Show. Mr. Skrips, educated at the School of Visual Arts, is influenced by American folk arts, the “Hairy Who”, and new German expressionism. His sculpture includes carving, welding, and assemblage of ‘found objects’.

 The Wayne Dumont Jr. Administration Hall Gallery, on Route 519 S. in Belvidere, is open to the public during regular business hours Monday through Friday and is an ADA accessible location. The Warren County Cultural and Heritage Commission sponsors this art show with support from the Warren County Freeholders, and is funded in part by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts.

The Manor Reopens on Sunday, March 6th, with a BANG !

“Musket Day” At Shippen Manor

Sunday, March 6, from 1-4 pm 

A look at 18th and 19th Century American soldiers and their firearms will be held Sunday, March 6, from 1-4 pm at Shippen Manor Museum, the restored 1754 ironmaster’s mansion in Oxford, NJ.

Members of the New Jersey Frontier Guard, a French & Indian War reenactment group based in Warren and Sussex (NJ) Counties, will display and discuss flintlock weapons as used by early settlers and militia up through the period of the Revolution. Members of the 27th New Jersey Volunteers, a recreated Civil War unit based in Hackettstown will be on hand to demonstrate the percussion weapons that succeeded flintlocks in the middle 1800s. Blank firing demonstrations will be ongoing from 2-4 pm.  The Manor will be available for tours starting at 1 pm, including colonial kitchen and domestic life presentations, suitable for all ages, by historian Sally Shutler.

 Shippen Manor is located ¼ mile west of the Rt. 31/Wall Street intersection in Oxford. The museum is open to the public on the first and second Sundays of each month, March through December, from 1-4 pm. There is no admission fee.

 Shippen Manor Museum will be closed to the public this January and February for renovations, though Commission and other scheduled group meetings will be conducted as planned, weather permitting. The Manor will reopen on Sunday, March 6 from 1-4 pm
